Michael Sokolowski to launch an interview-format podcast about local musicians

We all know about the big media stars of the music industry. If we're serious music fanatics, we also know about the acknowledged high achievers in the various fields and genres of music. But what about the musicians who aren't known beyond the communities in which they practice their art? What about the scenes and movements that arise in small towns and big cities all over the world, but never become popular outside of those jurisdictions? Do they not have stories at least as interesting as those lucky enough to become famous?

Musician and writer, Michael Sokolowski, wants to talk music with the people who make the music that their communities listen to, dance to, hold events to, jam with, and once in a while, share with the larger circle of humanity. Through in-depth discussion with local musical luminaries, Sokolowski seeks to better understand how local musical communities work, what makes each unique, and how regional "sounds" develop.

Exploring these ideas serves as the starting point for what we hope will be wide-ranging conversations between thoughtful people who happen to be musicians. Interesting talk is the goal, so the podcast won't adhere to the standard radio interview's promotional format; rather than track playback and commentary, the interview will focus on unbounded conversation, and allow listeners to access featured artists' content on the podcast's webpage.

Sokolowski is currently working on the first season, which will focus on the central Virginia scene and will be comprised of 1:1 interviews with its important players. If the podcast is a success, he hopes to examine other musical environments in future seasons.
